DISCUSSING - TASK 1

DISCUSSING AN eTWINNING PROJECT ON HISTORY

There are eTwinning projects focused on history. One of them "Stories in History" was awarded a European eTwinning Prize 2014 as a runner up project. The project itself  dealt with young children´s experiences during World War II., there were 3 participating schools from France, Czech Republic and Greece.

A task for you:
Watch the video, go through their project blog and TwinSpace, check out their work online, at school and during school trips or excursions. Concentrate your attention on project steps, methods, collaboration, students´ independent work, ICT tools used, outputs and final evaluation. Post your comments below this blog entry (which activities are inspiring for you, how you would access this topic . . . )

  1. Task 1: I was thrilled by watching the twinspace of this fantastic project and the activities the students did in order to approach a huge historical period and to reveal incidents and unknown heroes of that time.I think that the best way for students to understand the atmosphere of the Second World War was to search how young children like Anna Frank faced and expierienced the war. What an interesting activity was the one that students of today travelled back in time and sent hopeful messages and advice to Anna Frank.Congratulations to the teachers and the students involved in the project.May this be an excellent example for similar etwinning projects in the future dealing with historical themes and the crucial students' participation.

Congratulations on this wonderful, student-centred project! It displays all teaching methods for inspiring the students of the future, namely:

    - choice: the students can choose what aspect of child life they wish to highlight as well as which ways of life of specific youngsters they wish to include

    - collaboration: you can literally say that almost all parts of Europe collaborate in this project

    - communication: the Twinspace helps to share thoughts, ideas and results

    - critical thinking and creativity: designing a website requires critical thinking with regard to as to what contents can be presented in what ways as well as creativity when it comes to the mode(s) of presentation

I really like the idea of this project!

  5. A wonderful example on how we can work with children about difficult topics. I think for the kids this project was an important experience on how we make a topic interesting by collaborating with others, especially in the WW2 were involved so many countries, the grandparents of all of us, so such a project connect us in Europe and it helps student to become aware of the fact, that we have a common history. Congratulations to all the participants.
On the other hand the activities they and the tools they used are an example for best practice. I believe it not easy to do all this with partners, because every school is orgganised in a special way, so it seems that the colleagues really invested time and hard work to realize the project.

  6. I really think this project was inspiring for me. It was well structured, it used student- centered teaching methods and enabled students to learn, live and reproduce historical knowledge using their own initiatives. The students were also strongly motivated by international collaboration as they discovered that they share common bonds in their history and were able to overcome prejudice. The ict tools were innovative and it was very good to realise that besides having a common ground to work upon, each country had the opportunity to freely decide the methods and the tools to use in order to present the historical facts. The project made full advantage of cross-curriculum activites engaging field learning, critical thinking, evaluation and metacognition. The diversity of methods including field visits, exhibition, ict products, document research, question-making and evaluation creates an overall exciting experience. Surely opened a new window for me.

I really liked the project, because students can share their knowledge about the same topic. They can see the different point of view of the same fact. I liked the use of ICT tools, because in this way students are more interested in what they do.
I was thinking about a short history work for my pupils aged 10, for the 27th of January, the international day of memories. I want to let them know what was happenning during thet period in their town Alassio, make them search in the town library knews, informations, pictures of tsat period. I'd like to call some old people that were living in that period and tell my students what they rememberd about their childhood. We will look at some films about the tragedy of the WW2. At the end I would like to make an exibition with their drawings of their feelings aboout this topic

  8. The project is really original and inspiring. I especially like the creative writing activity of writing new entries to Anne Frank's diary. It must have been motivating and challenging for the students.

  9. What I like in this project is that students felt History as something that concerns them, something of their own, they were involved. And this is the meaning of learning History, feeling and thinking on History. Not learning dates and facts by heart.

  10. It was an excellent project and all the participants worked very hard. Congratulations! The project gave to the students the opportunity to discover by themselves the knowledge. Critical thinking and creativity were developed in the project. I liked the use of ICT tools and i know that students love to use them. The role of the teacher was that of facilitator, coach and fellow learner. Students were the protagonists.

  11. A very moving approach to thew Second World War as it has to do with children at that period of time. I liked the fact that students realized that History is something that personally concerns them and that history doesn't have only to do with powerful people but ordinary people, even children, can make history and affect the way things evolve.

  12. It was a complete project examining the WW2 analytically and presenting the most important aspects of it visually.
Visiting a relevant exhibition and finding documents from the web worked supplementary and the result was really
impressive .It is sure that the students gained and absorded the knowledge .They felt it, as they discovered it, so it is something that they will never forget. They have acquired and conquered the facts about the WW2 for ever.

    Congratulations on this inspiring project!
Working on this project the students were learn through research. They were develop knowledge, skills and competencies as well as the following basic and transversal skills: literacy, communication in foreign languages, digital literacy and social and civic competencies. The best thing for me in project are stories about daily life and learning how to use new ICT tools in historical content.

I like how we approach this project, where students become the potagonistas of learning. They collaborate, communicate and make conjectures and thoughts critically and creatively. This type of project allows us to approach the last acquiring critical awareness of what happened. It notes that is well planned and designed the entire project. Congratulations to students and teachers involved.

  16. A very good project, actually. I liked the way students approached primary sources and presented them. They worked in a very creative way. Maybe I would ask older students to be more critical on the perception of the historical events through films etc.

  18. What a great project!!! Congratulations to all students and teachers who created it. I liked the way they worked together: introducing themselfes, getting to know each other, presenting their school and all the sources which have been used. I especially liked children at war.

  19. I really liked the organisation of this project. I liked the fact that the pupils visited several historic places and gathered information creating their own exhibition. It was also very positive for me that they used ICT tools to present their work and this seems to have helped in the collaborative part of the work. There are pleanty of ideas which can be implemented with some adjustments to younger students. Congratulations to all students and teachers who participated.

It is a great project! I liked the way teachers and children worked. The new entries in Anna's diary was very smart. I liked the interview of the elderly lady and their visit to exchibition. I think they managed to feel history as something alive that concerns always all of us.

  23. It is magnificent the way you are planned the project and you involve the students and their work.I like very much the exchibition and the other people stories about Holocaust:Very nice theinteractive map.Well done.Congratulations.I feel inspired.

  24. This project must have been really involving both for students and for teachers. The Diary on the website documents its development form the beginning, and it is clear that the whole school-year's activity has been focused on it.
Students have had a central role in their learning, have been involved in each part of it, from the design to the evaluation. They have made an experience of cooperation using ICT in an effective way. Have interviewed (when possible) the witnesses of the event they studied on books or on internet. Have produced and criticised, have put themselves in the shoes of historical personalities.
I wonder if a similar experience would be possible in the more rigid didactics of an italian high school. But I feel inspired from this example, and I will reflect over the feasibility of some aspects of it in our context.

  25. A very good project!
I think that students could feel as a child in the WWII years; they approached great politicians (good and bad ones) from different countries as who had made their own History; they could feel themselves as a part of the same european citizenship.
    Compliment to the teachers!

  26. The approach towards WW II through children's eyes is certainly promising. I also like the variety of materials and activities included in this project, and obviously the students learned a lot. One of the most important aspects of this kind of joint project, however, is transnational collaboration. From the documentation it seems as if the students responded to each others' work, but apparently the students also did a lot of work within their classes. The answers to the last question of the survey supports this impression in a way because when asked about things that could be changed, many students apparently would vote for more transnational interaction.
To me this is interesting and important, because that's what makes a project most difficult: How can we encourage, support and promote collaboration between the "classrooms" and avoid working just side by side. From my point of view this is all the more difficult, as we often do not have so much time to focus intensively on a project - so many topics to cover according to the curriculum ...

  27. Task 1 - 2: I watched your blog is really cool I was speechless, a lot of details, I have to congratulate you and the partners who have worked on this project, of course including students. Surely it was tiring but I think in the end you are all pleased.
The structure and the papers published on the TwinSpace are fantastic, you faced a period of history that I love more than all others, years ago when I was teaching history, the old fashioned way, my students were fascinated by this period of history, perhaps because it is the closer to our time, or perhaps because in the Second World War there have been many stories of children like Anne Frank who faced the war in so atrocious that we know.
Now in primary school the historical period to deal with stops to the Romans, but every year a week before Memorial Day, "Shoah" we begin to approach the subject and so students perform activities of this historical period.
Task 2: With our students have addressed the subject on thousands of migrants arriving mainly in Sicily, Italy in all countries affected by war and knowing to risk starting with the hope of reaching a safe place to live peacefully Unfortunately for many ends badly because many adults and children die and every dream fades. So some photos desparate faces of these people will be the beginning of a long discussion in the classroom and for students who express their opinions on possible solutions to the problem.

  31. I like this project very much. It inspirated me in my own history project. I admire the fact that all members finished all tasks. I think that the most difficult thing is to integrate project to the school schedule and in the same time support students for collaboration and help them with solving every troubles. The project is creative and it involves collaboaration, communication and critical thinking. Thanks for these great teachers!
